Colleen McElfresh founded Bluebird Glass Studio more than 15 years ago to pursue a hobby that became an unstoppable passion. Brought up in a family a craftspeople, she has always enjoyed making things with her hands and sharing that joy with others through teaching. She found in glass a material that was perfectly suited to bringing all of her favorite traits of nature to light. Her personal artwork references both the gardens of land and the gardens of the sea as both hold sway over her heart.
History: Megan has been shadowing her mother's footsteps since elementary school, using Colleen's scraps from large pieces of work to make small mosiacs, anxiously awaiting the day she would be tall enough to use a soldering iron. In late high school she discovered Kilnforming and her work took a decided turn towards sculptural work. She has studied to numerous places across the United States to study with others who share similar interets. See her website for more information and a complete Resume of her travels.
Artist Statement: "Having grown up in a home atmosphere where many conversations dealt both with the biological sciences, specifically genetics and identity, and art, I find that my work focuses through that lens. Being aware of genetics has allowed me to watch it develop and its visual patterns change as the essence of the word human is defined. Patterns I see throughout my day remind me of the coding I observed as a child. “This identifies me? This makes me different from you?” This vast, molecular world dancing inside my body, keeping me alive, making me a unique sculpture of the human form is a constant source of amazement and inspiration." - Megan McElfresh
